As I always tell my students, we instrument makers actually do not make instruments but rather sounds. We attempt to make an object that is capable of producing a sound that resembles the human voice as closely as possible. Sound is a sensation transmitted by the human ear, which perceives sounds the way our skin feels and our eyes see. It is inexplicable what pleasure some simple sounds can bring. Although there are some physical and practical explanations for the process, the very essence of it is still somewhat mystical. When the sound produced in the outside world matches the sound resonating within our soul, we experience a cathartic sensation. Each and every instrument maker and musician is in search of this harmony.
